Just So Stories Book Review

Just So Stories is a book by Rudyard Kipling that was published in 1902.

It’s a ‘lots of stories in one’ kinda book. It’s old so it’s understandable if it’s hard to read but personally, I’m not a very good reader and I got through it with ease so you can too.

Lot’s of different chapters for lot’s of different things and my favourite was the last chapter, ‘The butterfly who stamped his foot’. It’s about a man who is very wise but very rich. One day he decides to feed all the animals in the world! He has a massive boat that’s full to the brim with food but then this massive creature comes up from the sea and eats all the food! Keep in mind that this boat was like a shipping boat that had containers of food stacked on top of each other and the creature ate all of it! The man asked “Why?” but the creature explained that he was the smallest out of his kind so he would need DOUBLE of the food he had to feed even the 2nd smallest! The man was just annoyed that the creature ate all the food and went away.

So as I mentioned, this man was very wise and because of that, he could communicate to animals. Mammals, birds, insects galore! But one particular day, a butterfly was showing off to his wife that he could make the man’s palace disappear with the stomp of his foot and then make it reappear if he stomped his foot again! Also this man had a ring that if he turned it once, an angel would appear and tell him what is going on in heaven, earth and hell. And if he turned his ring I think it was either 2 or 3 times, 3 angels would appear and be his servants and do whatever he said to do.

Back to the butterfly and his wife, the butterflies’ wife didn’t believe him and said, “Tsk! Such a liar, you could never do such a great thing! You would never even be able to bend a blade of GRASS with the stomp of your foot! And if you can; then show me!” At that, the butterfly knew that he could not do it! And he was worried because if he didn’t show his wife he could do it, she would never believe a WORD he would say ever again! Then the man came to the butterfly and said, “Why did you tell such a lie to your dear wife?” The butterfly answered and said, “I do not know! I just wanted to show off and make her proud of me!” Then the man said to the butterfly, “Because of your honesty, I will make it happen!”

The man then twisted his ring 3 times and then 3 angels descended and he told them, “When this butterfly stomps his foot, you will make my palace ascend high up above the clouds! Then when he stomps his foot again, you will descend back into the gardens I live in.” At that the butterfly went back to his goading wife and stomped his foot. Then the man’s palace flew high up into the clouds where they could not see it! The butterflies’ wife was astonished, and even more so, the butterfly! The man then told the butterfly to stomp his foot again and so he did! The palace then gently descended into the gardens and the butterflies’ wife had tears in her eyes and said to her husband, “I will never ever provoke you or doubt a word you say ever again!”

The reason I like it is because it teaches us 2 very important lessons. 1: That if we lie, things can end us in dirty ways that we don’t want to experience! And 2: If we are honest, those dirty consequences will shiver, curl up and die and the response you will then get will be 100% more positive than if you lie.

That’s all I have for today but until next time, keep my cheese drippy bruh!!
